As part of the commemorations of the 25th anniversary of the classification of Sintra as a Cultural Landscape of Humanity by UNESCO, the exhibition No Reino das Nuvens: Artists and the Invention of Sintra seeks, through the gathering of works by different creators and historical periods (from pre- history to contemporaneity), expressing and celebrating the multiple ways in which, from time immemorial, this mountain and its territory attracted the attention of artists and stimulated their creativity.
In the Kingdom of the Clouds: the Artists and the Invention of Sintra is, therefore, an exhibition about art, artists and their long and intimate relationship with this place, both natural and cultural, continually idealized, imagined and transformed. It brings together paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings, artists' books, photographs, videos, installations, including many that were purposely made for this exhibition, but also archaeological pieces and others that are not usually classified as art, combined with some of the literature inspired by Sintra. Organized into six thematic nuclei, the exhibition offers a kind of journey or visual narrative through this wonderful kingdom of the clouds – in the expression of Hans Christian Andersen (1866).
